Lameness is an important economic and welfare problem which also influences the behaviour of cows.

Freshly calved heifer prices averaged £1,550/head for the first three weeks of May, 3.8% more than the average of £1,493/head for April. Over the same period, the average price of a freshly calved cow fell by 8.9% (£122/head) to an average of £1,250/head, according to data provided by AHBD Meat Services.
Around the country, prices for dairy heifers and cows remained firm. At the latest Carmarthen auction on 27/05/09, nine dairy cows were traded at an average of £1,262/head, with one animal selling at £1,620. The top price for a dairy heifer at the auction reached £2,100, with an average of £1,512/head for 21 animals.
The Gisburn auction on 23/05/09 reported a maximum price of £1,860 for newly calved cows, with an auction average of £1,572/head. At the same auction, newly calved heifer prices averaged £1,753/head, with one animal selling for £2,200.
In Frome on 20/05/09, calved heifer prices reached £1,700, with the majority of animals trading for between £1,300 - £1,500/head. Calved cow prices peaked at £1,600, while Friesian heifer calves averaged £60/head.
